One of the things we love most about our pets is their high-energy that makes them enjoy jumping, running, and playing. When a pet has an orthopedic problem, it can hamper both mobility and the pet’s ability to comfortably participate in the activities they love most – apart from snuggling. At South Meadow Animal Clinic, our veterinarian is committed to helping our patients stay active and energetic with comprehensive orthopedic care from musculoskeletal examinations and evaluations to a variety of treatments and surgeries.

Common Orthopedic Problems in Pets

Orthopedic problems include those that affect the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, etc.) A variety of orthopedic conditions affect pets. Some of these, are genetic and/or congenital deformities, meaning pets are simply born with them. Others can develop over time as a result of overuse, injury, disease, and the natural aging process.
Some of the most common orthopedic conditions in pets include:

Orthopedic Veterinary Exams

An orthopedic veterinary exam begins with a general examination and palpation of your pet’s body. Our veterinarian will feel your pet’s bones, muscles, and joints and also observe your pet in motion. Depending on our findings, we might recommend further diagnostic testing which might include x-rays, ultrasound, and/or laboratory tests.

Orthopedic Veterinary Surgery

The appropriate treatment varies greatly depending on the individual patient. For some pets, pain and other symptoms can be adequately controlled with nutritional supplements, medications, holistic therapy, and lifestyle adjustments. Other pets will benefit most from corrective surgery designed to repair the musculoskeletal problem to mitigate pain and restore mobility.
Our veterinarian will discuss all of your pet’s options with you, typically recommending we try the least-invasive treatment that will be still be effective first. If necessary, our veterinarian and animal clinic is fully equipped to provide a variety of orthopedic surgeries to our patients.
